As we head into the holiday season, you may be looking for outerwear inspo either because your wardrobe is lacking in the topper category or because Santa wants to know what's on your list. Here is a list of my current faves and most are bump-friendly to boot (I could have gone on all day but had to try and keep it reasonable!). As always, NONA believes that 1 thing you really love and will wear for years to come is better than several 'meh' styles that end up collecting dust, so choose thoughtfully!
For me, wrap coats can easily look bathrobe-ish if the shawl collar is too big and the length isn't just right. Some people can really pull that look off, but lemme tell you something- hair and make up better be ON POINT otherwise it just translates to hot mess...or you have to be french with the "i woke up like this" perfectly undone topknot and flawless skin. Since neither my hair nor I are of french-girl origin, I tend to gravitate towards something more polished (almost a cross between a robe coat and a trench coat), that can easily be styled for a more dressy look or with jeans/white tee, and some chucks.
In love with this RL style and want it in every color!
The sharply-angled belt ends on this Geroge Simonton number make it stand out.
Mackage always hits the balance between classic and edgy with their hardware and leather trim details.
Super cute neutral plaid in a no-print-print (did you follow that?). IMO, this is like an animal print topper- it should really count as a neutral and get thrown over EVERYTHING.
The Oversized/Cocoon Coat:
Otherwise known as a total man-repeller silhouette, this is the coat you need after an indulgent Thanksgiving dinner. Let's be honest though, we dress for other girls, not men and I am A-ok with explaining to my husband for the millionth time "it's fashion, honey".
Everlane is just old faithful at this point. Love their mission, their transparency, and most importantly, their selection. Please note that you really do need to size down on this though in order to look like you are wearing the coat and not the reverse.
The coolest menswear option and love the slit sleeve- this is styled to perfection, just add a pair of white chanel loafers
(ok ok, or maybe these great subs from j crew
Can't go wrong with a good teddy bear coat. I included the Max Mara
splurge that I kinda die over as well as the more budget versions here
. Not Your Standard Blog also talked about her fave
So easy to style. Layer with a chunky sweater, denim, boots of choice (sorel
, gianvito rossi
, etc., doesn't matter) and you're done!
Just enough details with the slanted pockets, the swingey shape, and the drawstring.
If you are looking to spend $$$$ on an anorak, here's your girl! The grommeted belts, metallic lining, and fishtail hem make this cooler than the average.
So sleek, chic, and versatile with 3-in-1 options.
Definitely the most forgiving silhouette, mine carried me through the 3rd trimester in one of the worst NE winter seasons, but also provided enough ventilation so that when I got completely sweaty/out of breath from walking 10 feet, I didn't pass out from heatstroke. #winning!
The belted waist on this Mackage provides definition and shape if a regular schmatta cape isn't your thing (also looks super cute tied above a bump!).
Super cute with military details (and if money is no object, pierre balmain & burberry have more options).
This silhouette is here to stay- another great dress up/dress down layering piece and also perfect for those days that aren't completely arctic but there is still a nip in the air. Would be so cute over a body con midi dress and either stack heel boots or your favorite pair of sneakers.
A sophisticated take on the classic.
A little shimmer and shine if you're feeling bold.
Not always easy to find a puffer that you actually feel cute in but so necessary when the temps take a dive.
I'm really loving aether apparel's 'basic-yet-not' feel whether it's outerwear, sweaters, or their activewear.
And a super cute convertible maternity-to-post-baby option from Motherhood Maternity.
The Arrival's outerwear game is super strong. You'll wear this classic puffer forever (if you can get past their amazing leather jackets!)- look for their longer version to be restocked soon as well.
Heavy Duty/Chunky Sweaters:
Ok so I may be pushing it just a teensy bit counting these as outerwear but come on, how cute and necessary are these Mums Handmade chunky sweaters?! Loving both the pullover style as well as the cardigan!
So many amazing coats out there, and while we may not be excited for the freezing cold temps, at least there are cute ways to brave it! Did we miss any of your faves? Let us know what's keeping you warm!
